The new buildings Artists/Creative partners Creative programme
There are seven artists working on the Devonport Health Campus projects, these artists have been working on different phases of the project. Lesley Kerman and Emma Spring have made work for the Cumberland Centre, Fabrizia Bazzo and Lucy Casson have completed their pieces for the first phase at the Peninsula Dental School, Christian Ryan and David Harbott are currently creating art for the second phase there. Zest has also commissioned artist, Susan Deakin, to work with them on the new Primary Care Centre.
Christian Ryan
Over the last nine years Christian has developed his career as an artist designing and making site specific glass artwork. Since graduating in 2000 Christian initially gained experience working in glass studios and was soon undertaking commissions himself, this led to establishing his own studio in his home town of Bridgend, South Wales. Since then he has been producing commissioned work for a variety of clients including local government, healthcare, PFI projects, private clients and ecclesiastical bodies.
Christian's work has now been installed into the patient waitng areas, staff corridors and the students common room. His use of vibrant colours compliment the areas his work occupies and make these fun and friendly environments. His brightly coloured glass pieces have been well recieved by both patients and staff.

David Harbott
David’s fine art practice is firmly based in research, his public art works are designed specifically for each location. His compositions are informed by the history of landscape painting and then his images created using contemporary techniques, resulting in visually seductive and meaningful images. His practice is also rooted in public consultation and he involves the local community in the creative process helping generate a sense of ownership and inclusion in the final pieces. David is making ceiling tiles and prints for the wall in the Peninsula Dental School.

Lesley Kerman
Lesley is an artist who is based in Topsham and makes beautiful, intricate art works by embedding objects into a series of resin blocks. Each series of blocks is made for a specific location, in this case the Cumberland Centre at Devonport, and the contents of the blocks are determined after Lesley has consulted with members of the local community. Lesley is producing 12 blocks that will be located inside the newly refurbished Cumberland Centre. The first phase of the blocks are due to be installed in March 2010 with the remainder being installed later on in the summer.

Emma Spring
Emma lives and work in Plymouth, she makes large scale mosaic art works and recently had some of her work installed in a large hotel in Mauritius. For the Cumberland Centre Emma has designed pieces of work based on trees. However, these are no ordinary trees because within each one lays hidden shapes and animals. The trees have been designed in this way so that not only do they function as something bright to enhance the walls but also to keep young children amused as they try to find he ‘hidden’ figures.

Fabrizia Bazzo
Fabrizia lives and works in Somerset and is an artist that uses glass to make stunning large scale artworks for public spaces. However, the scale of the piece that she produced for the new Dental School is so large that she had to travel to Germany to fabricate it. Fabrizia’s work is always bold and colourful and is a real asset to the new building. The glass panels that Fabrizia has designed for the Dental School were installed in June 2009.
