The reception area in the Discovery Library

A new state of the art staff library has been created on level 5 of the new Southwest Cardiothoracic Centre at Derriford Hospital. Zest is leading the development of interior design and integrated artworks for this new space.

This area has been named Discovery to reflect the many different links the library has to such organisations as the British Antarctic Survey Medical Unit, the Peninsula Medical School, Plymouth Medical School, and staff from across the Plymouth area health community.

Zest has appointed Robin Blackledge, a well known London based artist to lead the design for the new reception and study areas. Inspiration for the designs has been drawn from Medical Imaging, the Plymouth Medical Society archive, the British Antarctic Survey Medical Unit, themes from the natural world and local environment including Bircham Valley, an areaof outstanding natural beauty behind the hospital.

Additional design projects within the library include:

  • Digital artworks
  • Glass screens to create a quiet reading area and provide an artwork that celebrates the generous donations made to fund the library fund
  • Display area for the Plymouth Medical Society Archive
  • Glass screens for the study carrels
  • Periodical display area
