Zest commissioned artist Emily Campbell to create art works for the Emergency Department at Derriford Hospital.
Visiting an Emergency Department can be stressful and Emily has taken this into account when creating these unique images. The aim of the art works is to take adults, children and their careres into a calmer and more relaxed frame of mind. Emily spent a period of time talking to the staff of the Emergency Department about areas of Plymouth that they thought were significant and should be included in the final images. She then photographed these areas and using digital photography, manipulated the images to create new and unusual views of the locality. The pictures aim to create new stories and to inspire people to look again, to transform the everyday into something extraordinary. The pictures in the children’s area aim to turn familiar locations into magical and exotic habitats.
The new waiting area has been very well recived by children and their parents.
"The comments from the children and parents have been fab... The pictures provide a valuable focus for children who are worried or frightened and the overall feel of the unit is great. All the children love the chairs, windows and interactive box. It gives them something else to focus on. They often wait a little while to be seen and the area provides them with a safe, interesting and non-threatening place to do so".

Emily's work was installed in both the adult and children's waiting areas in September 2009.
Emily has previously be been commissioned by Harplands Hospital and Haywood Hospital, Stoke on Trent, Westheath Health Centre, Birmingham and Hartlepool Police Station.
