Level 12 in Derriford Hospital is used exclusively for children and young people's services; over the years many different organisations have generously contributed to different projects to enliven the space. Over time however the scheme for the whole floor has become somewhat confused and the décor more than a little tired and in places very worn.
The Trust has recognised that the public spaces within Derriford are in need of refurbishment and has now embarked on a major refurbishment programme of all lift areas and circulation spaces.
The new design work for Level 12 has been completed by Plymouth based artist, Glen Johnston. The Zest team worked with the children and staff in the hospital to generate ideas for Glen to base his ideas on. The ideas that were generated included the themes of 'space' and 'under the sea' and Glen has managed to work both of these themes into his designs.
Games Board
The new games board has a noughts and crosses style game, a maze trail and spot-the-difference

We have now completed the design works outside the entrances and on the ward doors. Glen Johnson has designed a comic strip and characters that have been used throughout the Children and Young People's Wards to illustrate the importance of cleaning your hands on entering and exiting the unit.

Phase Two
The main emphasis of phase two of Level 12 enhancements will be to provide a much needed face lift for the Young People's day room. Artist Tony Walker has already worked on the the Young People's waiting area on Plym and has now been chosen by staff on level 12 to work with them on their ideas. He has had a consultation with several staff members and he is due to start on the project autumn/winter 2009.
